Turretclock by Heynrick Vabrie
The Breda clockmaker Heynrick Vabrie built a turretclock for the Jacobskerk (Curch of St. James) in The Hague before 1542. This is the earliest preserved Dutch turretclock with a tune barrel. The vertical verge escapement was governed by a foliot. The melodies on the tune barrel are programmed with the aid of adjustable pegs. The barrel is 30 cm wide and more than 1 ½ metres in diameter. The movement is now preserved and on display in the Dutch Gold, Silver and Clock Museum in Schoonhoven. During the Renaissance, several municipal clockmasters were mentioned, such as Henrijck Huygensz. (Dordrecht, 1490), Camp Davidsz. (Amsterdam, 1505), Jacob Jansz. (Alkmaar, 1555), Joost Jansz. (Rotterdam, 1556), Klaas Jansz. (Middelburg, 1568), Pieter Michielsz. (Alkmaar, 1583) and Derik Jacobsz. (Zaltbommel, 1585).
