| St. Jerome |
| Depictions of St Jerome in his study often feature a sandglass or a wallclock. These symbolise the temporal nature of human life. As translator of the Bible into the vernacular of his time, Jerome was grately admired by the humanists. This portrait was painted by a pupil of Marinus van Reymerswaele (1493-1576), who lived in the province of Zeeland. The renaissance in North-Europe witnessed the development of oil painting characterised by the care taken in the detailed depiction of human anatomy and fabrics. |
