During the Age of Discovery, interest in cartography and time measurement rapidly increased. Around 1600, following the lead of earlier regions in Italy and in southern Germany, several towns in Holland and Friesland become important producers of portable clocks. These were spring-driven neck watches and horizontal tableclocks and are striking examples of the excellence in craftsmanship that was practiced at the end of the Renaissance. In Holland, clockmakers were organised in guilds, such as the St. Luke's guild of Haarlem and the St. Eloys guild of Amsterdam. There was a distinction between the makers of large clocks and the smaller decorative clocks.

In 1582, after the calendar reform of Pope Gregory XIII, the Julian calendar was replaced by the Gregorian calendar. The southern Netherlands and the provinces of Brabant and Zeeland were amongst the first to adopt the new calendar, the province of Holland followed in 1583. The other provinces of Utrecht, Gelderland, Overijssel, Groningen, Friesland and Drente did not adopt the new calendar until 1700/01.
