| The ideal of eternity in classical art gave way to the fleeting moment in time of impressionism and photography. |

| From timelessness to a given moment in time |
19th century fine arts developed from neo-classicism via romanticism to impressionism. Whereas originally the aim was for a stylized idealistic beauty, an emotional perception of nature grew so that landscapes and the charms of changing daylight were discovered. The timeless perfection made way to a perfect moment in time. In The Netherlands this was expressed by the painters of the 'Haagse School'(Hague School). This development is associated with the rise of photography.
The painting 'De Tijd' (Time) (1810) by Pieter Christoffel Wonder (1780-1852) shows a neo-classicistic interpretation of transitoriness. (coll.: Rijksmuseum Amsterdam)
